We have shown that B-1 cells modify the behavior of several and different pathologies, from cancer to parasitic and fungal diseases. They also influence the evolution of auto-immune diseases and participate in both, immune-regulation and immunological tolerance. In melanoma, we are mostly concerned with molecules or signal transduction cascades involved with the metastatic potential of different cell lineages. For these purposes, modern methodologies are routinely used, from the production of monoclonal antibodies, cellular and molecular biology, genomics and proteomics to phage display. These approaches allow the biological characterization of specific molecules, some of which, for their cell surface location, can be used as prognostic and/or diagnostic markers.

B-1 physically interacts with B-1 cells in vitro after 72 hours of co-culture(Pérez et al., 2008).
A MUC18-MUC18 homophilic interaction mediates the physical contact between melanoma cells and B-1 lymphocytes (Staquicini et al., 2008).
Increased metastatic behavior of B16 cells induced by B-1 is dependent on the levels of extracellular signal–regulated kinase (ERK) phosphorylation (Pérez et al., 2008).
B-1 cells promote increased bone resorption in vivo (Pugliese et al., 2012).
